Contemporary paintings of creatures with attitude and three dimensional abstract works. What’s on the outside versus what’s on the inside…

Here’s a new small painting that I’ve just fin Here’s a new small painting that I’ve just finished. I’m loving working with bold lime and pink at the moment and this watchful creature emerged. One that is bright and alert but prefers to keep its own counsel and avoid direct eye contact.

I’m creating a collection of these small paintings that are 15 cm square and framing them in oak. If you would like to hear more about when I start to sell my small works direct online please click the link in my bio or message me…

This one is at an early stage and it’s on canvas This one is at an early stage and it’s on canvas whereas I’ve mostly been working on wooden panels lately. I’ve stored up some trouble for myself here!

The paint has stretched and weighed down the canvas quite a bit so I’ll need to restretch it when the paint is stable. Right now I’m only daring to keep it vertical for one minute so I’ll have to be patient…

I really enjoy making drawings like this one. Some I really enjoy making drawings like this one. Sometimes I make them from life but more often I use online images for convenience. I use a pen rather than a pencil so I can’t correct mistakes, if I’m not happy with it I make more drawings until I am.

I apply the paint at the end in a way in which I have little control and resist the temptation to manipulate it. A pop of colour doing its own thing…

Pouring paint can be fun but it can also be frustr Pouring paint can be fun but it can also be frustrating so I’ve been trying to understand my Golden fluid acrylic paints a little better. It seems pigment density is key, paint colours with lower density pigments tend to stay on the surface whereas heavier pigments usually sink.

Here are the main colours I use with the lowest density pigments at the top in case it helps anyone here. Now I know why I see so much Quinacridone Magenta!…

I’m often asked “How long do your paintings ta I’m often asked “How long do your paintings take to dry?” Well it’s been over seven years since I made this one and the bulge of paint is very nearly dry. But luckily it doesn’t take this long until I’m happy to let them go!

They start flat, then are gradually tilted and hang in my studio for many months and occasionally years when they’re finished, until I’m confident the outer skin is strong enough to contain the liquid paint within.

This painting is a big one for me at 91cm square and was made for my solo show also called Precarious. I was grateful to be awarded the show as a prize by Cass Art in the National Open Art Exhibition.

If you’re interested in buying this painting, it’s for sale online with Rise Art, please click the link in my bio.
